Students share rooms due to housing shortage

The housing shortage at the beginning of this academic year resulted in a number of studios in Campus Plaza being shared by two international students. This was confirmed by the spokespersons of both Idealis and DUWO. This concept of shared rooms, which resembles the systems in many other countries, is new to WUR students.

Campus Plaza, the latest addition to the student housing in Wageningen, was constructed with all self-contained rooms and has a capacity of 440 studios. Tenants are allowed by owner DUWO to host another person on a regular basis. Due to dearth of rooms in the beginning of this academic year, several international students were informed by Idealis about this option. As Hellen Albers from Idealis explains: ‘It was a big challenge for Idealis to provide housing for all international students in time.’ This led the organisation to referring students to DUWO housing. In addition, international students were notified about the possibility of sharing. The restriction was that the roommate should also be an international student awaiting a room.

A small group of international students availed this possibility and are now sharing 21m2 rooms. Their exact number is unknown, says Marja Weverling of DUWO, because the organisation signs a contract with only one occupant. He or she is free to host another person.

Some of the students who live in Campus Plaza on shared basis are happy about the lower rents they have to pay, whereas a few express their dislike of insufficient space and the unfurnished status of the rooms. The students are eligible to try for self-contained or non-shared rooms with Idealis while they are at DUWO and can move out as and when vacancies arise.
