Student debt makes it harder to get mortgage

People with a student debt are finding it less and less easy to get a mortgage. The crisis has made banks stricter.

A spokesperson from the mortgage adviser Hypotheker said this on the Dutch NOS news. ‘Mortgage providers have always asked whether there are any additional debts. But what we have seen over the past year is that student debts are given more weight. And that is a problem for starters in particular.’ In the past people assumed that graduates would find jobs, but now that mortgage providers are obliged to safeguard the welfare of their clients, they don’t take that for granted any more. Student loans are not registered with the Office for Debt Registration in Tiel. This makes it possible for many mortgage applicants to keep quiet about them.
