Starting today, bus drivers and other employees in regional transit will be going on strike. The strike may last for several days. Syntus Gelderland, which operates lines such as the buses that run between Ede-Wageningen and campus, expects the strike to last for at least three days.
This will be problematic for students who typically take public transportation to their education institution. However, in spite of the strike, various institutions have stated that students will still be required to arrive for their exams and courses on time.
For example, the exam week of Saxion University of Applied Sciences will continue as planned. ‘Prepare for your commute and leave your house on time. It would be a shame if you missed the last few exams.’ The HAN University of Applied Sciences does not intend to reschedule its course activities either: ‘In any case, be sure to follow the news closely, so that you are not surprised to find that certain bus and train routes are not running.’
Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam are also advising students that they need to find a different mode of transportation promptly if they have to attend a lecture or exam.
Wages, breaks
Student alert: public transportation strikeThe national strike was declared because the trade unions were unable to reach an agreement with employers on the new collective labour agreement (CAO). The trade unions demand better wages, less work pressure, and more breaks.
In Amersfoort, Zwolle, Arnhem, and the province of Limburg, certain train lines not operated by NS (the Dutch state railway operator) will also not be in service. Buses and trams will not be service in Utrecht and neither will certain lines in Rotterdam.
