Social science studies popular

Wageningen University’s Bachelor’s degree programmes in the social sciences are attracting far more students than last year. Management, Economics & Consumer Studies, Public Health & Society and Applied Communication Science all have 70 percent more preliminary registrations than this time last year, according to figures produced by Studielink, which records first-year enrolments. About one hundred new students have applied for Management, Economics & Consumer Studies while Public Health & Society has around 50. Applied Communication Science, which saw a substantial fall in the number of students last year, now has more than 20 new students. A total of nearly 1200 new Bachelor’s students have enrolled for a degree in Wageningen. That is 11 percent more than last year. The most popular programmes are Biology and Nutrition & Health, both heading for 130 first years. International Development Studies is suddenly another favourite, attracting the interest of more than ninety students (an increase of 19 percent compared with this time last year). VHL The latest figures, for mid-July, show that Van Hall Larenstein university of applied sciences had 1156 new students, about level with the same time last year. There has been a big fall in the number of students doing a part-time degree, though. Spokesperson Judith Pierik says this is because you can no longer get funding for a second higher education qualification. ‘This nationwide trend started last year and now we are seeing it continue.’ However, the full-time programmes are doing well. In particular, a lot of students are opting for AgriBusiness & Management (Leeuwarden and Wageningen), Coastal & Marine Management and Food Technology in Leeuwarden, Forest & Nature Management and Land & Water Management in Velp and Tropical Agriculture in Wageningen.
