New stables

Once again Wageningen UR has facilities for horse research. Five stables have been built on De Ossekampen test farm, for research on horses used for sport and recreation. Professor Johan van Leeuwen of the Experimental Animal Sciences Group is one of the people who will be using the new accommodation. Van Leeuwen: ‘We want high-tech measuring facilities here so we can record the movements of horses in three dimensions. We also want to be able to take power measurements under the hooves and pressure measurements under the saddle.’ The results should lead to advice on how to prevent cartilage deformities (osteochondrosis) and injuries to horses, by providing instructions on aspects including riding technique. / JH
