Professor Johan van Arendonk, chair of Breeding and Genetics has been appointed scientific director of the Wageningen Institute of Animal Sciences. Van Arendonk took up the post on 1 February. He succeeds Professor Seerp Tamminga, who had held the position since 1995. At present there are about 40 young PhD candidates following programmes to become internationally recognised researchers. WIAS is one of the five Wageningen research schools recognised by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
