More space for bikes and pedestrians

Bikes and pedestrians are given more space on campus. Yesterday a start was made in widening a large portion of the paths between Forum and Atlas.

Currently the paths are too narrow, says Ad van der Haven of Facility and Services. Which leads to conflicts. Especially with the growth in student numbers on campus. Therefore, some of the paths are being restyled. Bike paths are given an extra pedestrian stroke alongside of it, and pedestrian paths are widened. The Thymos (bike)path between Bongerd and Orion will be extended to Droevendaalsesteeg towards Radix.

Apart from the paths, also the area in front of Forum is being renewed. It will be furnished as ‘market square’. Several hundred seats and services are added which will enable the option to place market stalls. According to Van der Have there will not be a fixed market day, but the square makes it feasible to occasionally serve as marketplace. He also expresses that it is planned to also provide Wi-Fi connection at the market square.

The third eye-catching change is the construction of an amphitheatre between Zodiac and Helix. Before the summer a kind of theatre place was created between Orion and Atlas. That thing, also known as The Hill, is really not more than a semi-circular elevation of the ground. The new amphitheatre will be made up of two concrete levels. There will also be facilities provided such as water, electricity and IT.
