‘Nacht van de Fooi’ is an annual student initiative where as many as possible catering locations in 14 participating cities donate their tips. The money raised will be used to finance six small scale development projects. The national yield will be doubled by the Wild Geese Foundation. ‘Because of last year’s success, six projects were now chosen instead of five,’ shares Tessa Kuyvenhoven, board member of Nacht van de Fooi Wageningen and second year Management, Economics and Consumer Studies.

Last year 4800 euro was raised in Wageningen. We want to make it bigger than last year,’ says Tessa. Besides the 40 restaurants and pubs that donate their tips on the 28th of May, also the student associations are involved. ‘KSV is offering a brunch after a large house party. Ceres has a prom on the 28th and will name all the restaurants that are participating, so that the members can enjoy their dinner beforehand at those locations.’ In addition there are performances by the pole dance association Allegra and all kinds of bands. ‘So there is something for everyone,’ says Tessa. There will also be workshops such as Urban yoga, writing ‘Loesjes’ (Funny Dutch one-liners), and a beer tasting workshop. In most cases half of the yield of the workshops is donated to the Nacht van de Fooi. And in the evening also a comedy night in the library.

‘The amazing thing about Nacht van de Fooi is that you can contribute by just having a drink on a terrace. Due to the small scale of the project, you can see directly where the money is used for.’ For example for the Ray of Light Foundation, who replaces dangerous kerosene lamps with light which runs on solar power. ‘You can give people a better life while going out for a night in Wageningen, so it is a win-win situation.
