MENDEL

'So is that plant's stalk purple or green?'

The students of the Wiringherlant College in North Holland have to look carefully. They are testing Mendel’s laws of heredity for themselves by crossing tomato plants and noting the variation in the colour of the stalks and cotyledons. The course, called Tomato in the classroom, has been ordered by more than 100 schools since it was made available in June, which means about 12,000 secondary school students will be sowing tomato plants. The course is the brainchild of the Plant Sciences programme and vegetable seed company Nunhems.
