Longest thesis

With two parts and exactly 1,100 pages, the thesis written by Theo Spek will become the longest PhD thesis in the history of Wageningen on 1 October.

The historical geographer did his research on the typical open field system of the province of Drenthe ‘Het Drentse esdorpenlandschap’. This will put the 1983 thesis ‘La forêt du Banco’ by J. de Koning into second place with its 1,077 pages. The shortest thesis ever dates from 1972, and while only eleven pages long has a very long title: ‘Inactivation of peroxidase, pectinesterase and alkaline phosphatase in polymers as a model for irradiation of dried foodstuffs’. / MW
