Insect cookbook presented

Having sold 5000 copies, the Insect Cookbook by Wageningen entomologists Arnold van Huis and Marcel Dicke is a modest bestseller in the Netherlands. So now they want to conquer the rest of the world with an English translation.

The first copy was handed to future board chair Louise Fresco on Monday 17 March. Besides witnessing the launch of the translation, the audience also had an opportunity chance to shudder at the sight of a terrarium full of grasshoppers, and of course to taste a range of insect snacks. These were prepared by Henk van Gurp, teacher at the Rijn-Ijssel catering college, who was responsible for the book’s culinary content.

The big question is whether the wider world needs any convincing. Back in September, the Wageningen researchers published a report on behalf of the world food organization FAO. It was immediately downloaded one million times. That is worth celebrating with a few insect snacks.

The entomologists organise from 14 to and include 17 May in Wageningen the symposium Insects to feed the world.
