Wageningen University wanted to abolish the free lab coat and safety goggles because of the wide-scale abuse of the system by students who turn up far more than once to collect their lab coat. The Student Council acknowledges that the abuse has to stop but says that abolishing the scheme would also affect the students who do stick to the rules.

In a comment, the Executive Board says it is ‘disappointed’ in the students’ attitude. Even so, the old system will remain in place this year. There is still no sign of a permanent solution. The student politicians are suggesting various alternatives, such as handing out vouchers. But the university sees abolition as the only viable way of stopping abuse and calls the Student Council’s solutions ‘unrealistic’. Apparently, earlier trials with administrative procedures ended in failure.
