Bales is professor of Contemporary Slavery at the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham. The documentary based on his work and co-written by him, Slavery: A Global Investigation, won the Peabody Award for 2000 and two Emmy Awards in 2002. His achievements include being invited as an advisor to the US, British, Irish, Norwegian, Nepali governments and the Economic Community of West African States on the formulation of policy on slavery and human trafficking, and publishing a report on forced labour in the USA. His latest book, Blood and Earth: Modern Slavery, Ecocide, and the Secret to Saving the World, which was published in January 2016, explores the relationship between slavery and environmental destruction.
‘Kevin can pick and choose the venues he speaks at. We were glad he was so enthusiastic about our approach to this lecture series that he could immediately commit. We are excited that it all worked out,’ says Angela Lewis from Studium Generale’s team. In his lecture, Bales will discuss slavery in relation to the consumer, consumption, the state, and the private sector. Studium Generale and the Green Office hope his expert insight into the topic will provide a fitting conclusion to this lecture series on the origin of modern slavery and its manifestation in the electronics, fashion, tea, and cacao supply chains.
