Double victory for skater

Skater Mark Ooijevaar has won two gold medals at the Winter Universiade in Torino.

Ooijevaar, a Wageningen student, won the five as well as the ten kilometre speed skating at the Olympic games for students, clocking up a personal best for both distances. At the medal ceremony for the 5000 metres, Ooijevaar was flanked by two Russians: Ivan Skobrev won silver and Andrey Burlyaev bronze. In the 10,000 metres a third Russian skater, Artem Belousov, was runner up, with Myung Seok Kim of Korea in third place.

In the team pursuit final Ooijevaar and the Dutch team just missed a medal. The winners were the Italian team, which included Enrico Fabris, all-round runner up in the European Speed Skating Championships held a week before the Universiade.
