Tammo Bult, director of Imares, has been nominated as president of the European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Organisation (EFARO).
In EFARO 27 European research institutes are united working in the field of fishery and aquaculture. Bult has been elected in the general membership meeting on 4 June as president of the association, founded in 1989, because he wants to put fishery and aquaculture explicitly on the agenda in Brussels. Bult: ‘First we have to get fishery and aquaculture as high as possible on the European agenda, second we have to deliver ideas about what according to us are the most important challenges in this area.’
To achieve that Bult wants the institute to write more common position papers and to offer them actively in Brussels. ‘We should also organise something around the handover of our documents,’ says Bult. In addition it has to his initiative been decided to hold the annual meetings of EFARO from now on in Brussels, instead of in a different European city every year.
Bult will fulfill the position of President of EFARO for the usual period of two years. Since October 2014 he is also vice-president of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). He combines these other positions with his work as director of Imares.
