Art route complete

Anne Holtrop’s concrete pavilion Batara was placed at a rather remote corner of the campus last week. Logistically it was quite a job as Batara is far and away the biggest art work on the campus.

Batara is Arabic for ‘carve out’ and refers to a building method. Amsterdam-based Holtrop is an architect and artist. Batara was made for the latest edition of Beelden op de Berg, an exhibition of sculptures and installations in Belmonte Arboretum last summer. The theme of the exhibition was ‘authenticity and manipulation’. Batara is sltuated next to the pond behind Zodiac. According to Ad van der Have (Facilities Services), the work completes the art route on campus. ‘The art route runs between two high points – this work to the west and Norman Dilworth’s steel Sign in Recline near Atlas. The route is pretty much complete, although we could fit in a few more art works.’
